ROMAN REPUBLIC. Q. Pomponius Musa. AR Denarius (3.78 gms), Rome Mint, 56 B.C. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5.
Cr-410/8; Syd-823. Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo right; eight-rayed star to left; Reverse: Urania, the Muse of Astronomy, wearing long flowing tunic and peplum, standing left, touching globus set upon base with wand. Emanating from the highly popular series of muses that served as a pun in relation to the name of the moneyer (Musa), this splendid example featuring Urania exhibits very little in the way of handling, all while retaining great brilliance and some hints of toning nearer the peripheries.
Estimate: $1000 - $1500
