It is interesting to note that the second to last digit of the date appears to be an 8 over 7. Logic would dictate that this is the result of using an unfinished die with the date simply as "177". Though the second to last digit is clean with no evidence of being over a different number, the area just to the upper right bears an uncanny resemblance to the corners of a "7" from this period.
