CATALOG OF THE SPLENDID COLLECTION OF SILVER & COPPER COINS OF THE UNITED STATES FORMED BY JOHN P. LYMAN, ESQ., BOSTON. Philadelphia: S.T. Freeman & Co., November 7, 1913. 8vo, original gilt-printed white paper covers. (2), 42 pages; 619 lots; 8 fine photographic plates. Hand-priced in ink. Two coins (lots 440 and 469) are cut out of Plate VII. Spine weak and taped; very good or so with damage as noted. Adams 9 and 11-12, the last partly plated. Three major S.H. Chapman sales, the last of which includes most of the plates. The Groves sale is important for California pioneer gold coins, American colonials and important European silver coins. The Sargent collection was summarized by Chapman as comprising "a splendid collection of cents, many in extraordinary condition and with a great series of Cents of 1794 including a new reverse die and two varieties unknown to Hays and a new combination unpublished; uncirculated specimens of 1795, 1796, 1797, 1798, an excellent 1799, uncirculated specimens of 1800, 2, 3, 1809, 1821, 1823 perfect date, of which last only one other specimen is known in this preservation, etc." The Lyman sale is rated A- by Adams: "Proof 1801-02-03 $1. 1804 $1 with 6 page analysis. MS 1805 10¢, XF 1802 5¢. Excellent cents: MS chain, 1807, 1813, 1814." While it is unfortunate that two coins are cut from the seventh plate, the other seen plates are fully intact. The sale features an 1804 dollar with six pages of descriptive text. Four of the superb plates depict choice United States large cents, one illustrates half cents, and the remaining three are devoted to rare American silver coins. Davis 222. Ex Cardinal Collection Library.
