The 1923 Chapman--One of the Rarest of the Large Cent Books
Chapman, S. Hudson. THE UNITED STATES CENTS OF THE YEAR 1794. Philadelphia, 1923. First edition. 4to, original blue cloth; front cover lettered in gilt. (2), 28, (2) pages; 4 fine plates. Several neat ink corrections in the text; equivalent penciled Maris and Hays numbers in the text neatly erased though still faintly discernable. Small (1 cm) marginal tear to one leaf; front hinge cracked. Very good. Inscribed in pencil on the front flyleaf: "Walter D. McCaw, Brig Gen - USA 1923." Copy No. 15 of perhaps 100 copies originally printed. In his 1979 article "The Rarity and Value of Large Cent Literature," John Adams states: "More than 50 copies were printed, but all were recalled to correct numerous mistakes, many of which were repeated in the 1926 edition." Chapman's efforts to cover his embarrassment were apparently quite successful since this work is now considered to be one of the rarest works on United States large cents, with around ten copies still extant. General McCaw was one of the top cent collectors of the day and his outstanding collection was sold by Thomas Elder in 1930. Ex August 8-9, 1968 Colby Ritzman sale, lot 30; ex Harry W. Bass, Jr. Library (Kolbe Sale 75, lot 87); ex Jim Neiswinter Library.
(Estimate: $2000)
