Rare Large-Paper Cogan
Cogan, Edward. CATALOGUE OF A VERY LARGE COLLECTION OF RARE AND VALUABLE AMERICAN, TOGETHER WITH A FEW CHOICE SPECIMENS OF ENGLISH SILVER & COPPER COINS, COMPRISING SOME OF THE VERY RAREST PIECES EVER YET OFFERED FOR SALE. TOGETHER WITH A FINE COLLECTION OF MEDALS, STORE CARDS, PRESIDENTIAL AND POLITICAL TOKENS, &C. Philadelphia, May 21-22, 1860. 4to, modern brown antiqued half calf with tan linen sides, original front printed paper cover trimmed and mounted to front; spine lettered and decorated in gilt. 52 pages, interleaved; 1136 lots. Marginal fore-edge staining to first half of volume; very good in an attractive fine binding. Adams 6. The Interleaved Large Paper Edition of the pre-sale catalogue (a large-paper edition was also printed of the post-sale priced catalogue), handsomely bound by Alan Grace. Adams page 18: "Eight (Cogan) catalogs, all of which were issued in the 1860's, come in special editions printed on large paper... but all eight are so rare as to be virtually noncollectible. A reasonable guess is that five to ten copies were originally run off." Rated B+ overall by Adams: "1823 25¢. NE shilling. Lord Baltimore Groat. Kentucky ?¢, silver. Many 1¢, ?¢ proofs." Attinelli 17, identifying the owner as Alfred Taylor. Davis 253. Ex Armand Champa Library (Davis/Bowers Sale IV, lot 3312); Money Tree Sale 29, lot 250; David Sklow Sale 15, lot 937; ex Cardinal Collection Library.
(Estimate: $300)
