1865 Cogan Rarity on Large Paper
Cogan, Edward. CATALOGUE OF EDWARD COGAN'S COLLECTION OF AMERICAN AND FOREIGN SILVER & COPPER COINS, MEDALS, &C. FINE NUMISMATIC WORKS, SMALL MAHOGANY COIN CABINET, AND A QUANTITY OF PAPER MONEY. New York: Bangs, Merwin & Co., June 29, 1865. 4to [26 by 20 cm], original green printed paper covers. 16 leaves, text printed on versos only; 485 lots. Covers a bit dusty and with minor chips, else near fine. Housed in a brown half calf document folder constructed by Alan Grace. Adams 15. A rare large-paper copy of catalogue that is scarce in any form. While it may be tempting to explain the scarcity of this catalogue to its being a "collection" formed from a dealer's stock, the sale realized a $1.79/lot average, which is well above average for the time. Attinelli 41: "A few copies of the catalogue were issued on large paper." Davis 256, noting that evidence exists connecting the collection to John K. Wiggins. Ex Armand Champa Library (Davis/Bowers sale IV, lot 3324); ex David Sklow Sale 15, lot 938; ex Cardinal Collection Library.
(Estimate: $300)
