Additional Elder Rarities
Elder, Thomas L. [editor]. THE ELDER MAGAZINE. DEVOTED CHIEFLY TO COINS AND COIN COLLECTING. Volume I, Nos. 4 and 7 (New York, April and July 1910). Two issues. 8vo, self-covered, as published. 32 pages total. Very good to near fine. [with] Elder, Thomas L. [editor]. THE COLLECTOR'S NOTES. Volume II, Nos. 1 and 2 (New York, September 1926 and January 1927). Two issues. 8vo, self-covered, as published. Paginated (21)-24 and (1)-7, (1), respectively. Near fine. Accompanied by a number of Elder-related clippings from Collectors' World. Bourne 1910-1 and 1920-9. This iteration of The Elder Magazine is very rare publication. The first issue here present includes Frank A. Leach's "The History of the American Cent." One can tell that Elder made a real effort to reduce the tension between himself and ANA officials, though at times he cannot restrain himself, complaining, for example, in the April 1910 issue about the editorial content of The Numismatist ("It is high time to run a blue pencil through some of the impertinent, not to say unauthorized, criticism such as was indulged in the recent issue. Is the official organ getting to be a numismatic 'yellow journal?'"). The Collector's Notes is an Elder publication that awaits the attention of a bibliographer. It was run in some of Elder's catalogues as commentary, but also occasionally appeared, as here, as a stand-alone publication. These offprints (if that is what they are) are infrequently encountered. Ex M. Bourne Library.
