Zabriskie-Lawrence Sale with Plate

Plate inserted into catalogue, not being original to this copy. Plate with marginal stains; typewritten notation on back of plate identifies it as ex ANS Library. Pages largely unopened. Very good. Adams 104, with plates. Rated A- overall and A for tokens. Frossard's introduction to the sale mentions the mintmarked gold coins in the sale, noting their rarity (the collecting of U.S. federal issues from the branch mints prior to the publication of Heaton's treatise on the subject was more common than is frequently supposed). It also discusses the British and ancient coins to be offered. The sale, however, is most important for its store cards, medals and encased postage, which Frossard states were the result of some three decades of collecting. Adams calls the sale "definitive" for store cards, and notes the inclusion of some extremely rare Betts medals. The "Brooklyn collector" mentioned in the title is identified on this copy as Benjamin Betts. Only 25 catalogues were issued with the plate, though (as mentioned above) this catalogue, which is not on thick paper, was not the catalogue into which this plate was originally included.
