The Special Collected Hardbound Edition of Kosoff's First 28 Sales
Kosoff, A. [Numismatic Gallery]. AUCTION SALE CATALOGUES. NUMBERS 1-28. New York, 1940-44. A complete run of twenty-eight catalogues, bound in four volumes. Three volumes 8vo and one 4to, original matching black cloth, gilt; original printed card covers bound in throughout; prices realized lists for all sales except the first bound in. Sale 13 priced in pencil. Spines just a trifle worn and faded; a near fine set. Special Collected Hardbound Edition. ADOLPH FRIEDMAN stamped in gilt at the base of the upper covers. Three of the volumes are inscribed and signed by Kosoff; the last volume is also signed by Kreisberg. Each volume also features the following inscription: "6/69, Mike, In memory of Steve I present this book for your library. Best, Otto." Ex libris Adolph Friedman. From the Kliman library. Only a few of these sets, bound in groups by Kosoff at the time, were issued. Though lacking the panache of his later emissions, these early catalogues reveal the true essence of Kosoff's success: hard work and great ambition. The long series of Julius Guttag sales and the Higgy sale, considered by Kosoff to be the beginning of the modern coin market, are especially notable. Additionally, many bibliophiles are unaware of the great numismatic books and libraries that came to market in these remarkably varied sales. To our knowledge, only five sets have come to market in recent years (this one, the mixed Boyd/Raymond set in the Ford library, Kosoff's personal set, the Albany Numismatic Society set and Leonard Kusterer's set). Ex Kolbe Sale 65, lot 332; ex Phil Ralls Library (Kolbe & Fanning Sale 134), lot 133; ex Cardinal Collection Library.
