The Continuation of Leal's American Numismatist
Leal, C.E. [printer]. THE COLLECTOR'S MAGAZINE. Volume II, Nos. 1-2 (Paterson, July & August 1888. 8vo, original printed paper covers. 24 pages total, plus ads. Folded for mailing. Very good or better. Bourne 1880-104. The only copies we have handled. The Collector's Magazine was the continuation of C.E. Leal's The American Numismatist, which had ceased publication at the end of its first volume in December 1887. Leal's name is only on this publication as the printer, though both issues feature full-page ads offering complete sets of The American Numismatist and much of the content is similar in nature, if broader in scope (with numismatics no longer the sole focus). Crawford attributes the publication to A. Lehmann, Jr., a Paterson stamp dealer featured very prominently in the publication. According to Crawford, the present publication lasted a mere three issues; it was revived for four additional issues in 1891, which are attributed by Crawford to Leal. An interesting and detailed article about Leal's publications, by Kalamazoo stalwart Joel J. Orosz, can be found in his Printer's Devil column appearing in the Winter 1997 issue of The Asylum. Crawford 509. Ex M. Bourne Library.
