[with] THE STAMP AND COIN GAZETTE. Volume II, Nos. 19-24, Volume III, Nos. 25-30. [with] THE PHILATELIC GAZETTE. Volume IV, No. 5. Altoona, September 1884; April, July-August, and October-December 1885; January-June 1886 and July-December 1886; and December 1887. Twenty-one issues, total. 8vo, self-covered or with original printed paper covers, as published. Condition varies from good to fine, with some detached covers, but with most being very good. Bourne 1880-47 and 1880-60. A substantial group of this rare publication. Despite the title metamorphoses, numismatic topics were included from the very beginning. Frank W. Doughty was an early contributor, and Lyman Low was as well. An article in the December 1885 issue on "How Auction Sales of Coins are Conducted" endeavors to explain "the process by which from $50,000 to $100,000 worth of coins annually change hands in the United States." In later issues, Lyman Low became editor of the numismatic department. It was the publisher's intent, from Nos. 9 through 29, to "devote equal space to philately and numismatics," and, if this goal was not entirely achieved, there is, nevertheless, a great wealth of interesting and useful numismatic information to be found in the publication. Crawford 609-610. Ex M. Bourne Library.
