Two volumes with detached rear card covers, but overall a near fine set. The official published records of the oldest numismatic organization in the country to last for any significant amount of time. Founded in January 1858, three months before the formation of the American Numismatic Society, the Numismatic Society of Philadelphia was created when eight local numismatists "who had long felt the want of such an association, organized a society for the purpose of prosecuting their favorite study in a more systematic and satisfactory manner. The mania for coin collecting was then raging fiercely, and desires had arisen with very many persons to become better acquainted with the science" -- Proceedings, 1867. While the Society emphasized antiquarian studies in later years, it continued to publish interesting numismatic articles, including one by John Story Jenks, being a talk that he gave on January 4, 1906, illustrated by coins from his own collection. Ex M. Bourne Library.
