Complete Set of Proskey Catalogues
Proskey, David. COMPLETE SET OF NUMISMATIC AUCTION SALE CATALOGUES. New York, 1876-1887. Five catalogues bound in one volume. 8vo, later maroon cloth with black spine label, gilt; original printed paper covers bound in. Small portion of the upper corner of the front cover of the first sale missing. Third and fifth sales hand-priced. Generally fine or nearly so. Adams 1-5. A complete set of this important and underrated cataloguer. Adams pages 55-57: "Proskey was perhaps the most accomplished numismatist the United States has produced... Beyond question, the high water mark of the short series is the Thian collection of Confederate money (December 15, 1885); the contents of this collection duly reflect the great expertise of its owner. Also of interest of Proskey's lenghty verbal assault on the brothers Chapman (see catalog of May 6 and 7, 1886)... Proskey catalogs are of above average scarcity in the numismatic world." Ex John W. Adams Library (Kolbe Sale 44, lot 229); ex Kolbe sale 58, lot 1112; ex Kolbe & Fanning Sale 129, lot 513, at $400 hammer; ex Cardinal Collection Library.
(Estimate: $300)
