Most sales are hand-priced, though trimming affects some of the pricing. Following the Smith & Sampson partnership, Sampson (c. 1840-1899) conducted 22 sales from 1881 to 1889 beginning with the L.F. Montanye sale, which Adams has called "among the best of the 1880s" (it was written by Frossard). Includes the notable C.F. Frothingham catalogue with a fine photographic plate depicting highlights of his remarkable collection of large cents, featuring several finest knowns.
