Bound Scott Catalogues, ex Fuld & Bass
Scott & Company, et al. NUMISMATIC AUCTION CATALOGUES. New York, 1877-1897. Thirty-nine catalogues, bound in three volumes. Includes Adams 1-25, 28-32, 35-39 and 41-44. 8vo, modern green cloth, gilt; most original printed paper covers bound in. Sales 1-15, 17, 19-25, 28-30, 35, 37, 39, 41 and 43 are hand-priced. Sale 19 includes the chromolithographic plate, slightly trimmed, Sale 36 has the halftone plate; Sale 39 has the two halftone plates, somewhat trimmed. Unpriced duplicate of Sale 8 bound in. Some extra-illustrating throughout (see comments). Trimming occasionally affects pricing. Near fine. Adams 1-25, 28-32, 35-39 and 41-44. An impressive group, over 80% complete. The Scott sales can be a little confusing to collectors because Scott & Company had their own numbering system, which is different than that used by Adams. This is because the majority of their sales were non-numismatic. For this reason, they are often considered of little importance by modern collectors, but while Scott's personal interests may not have centered on coins, he hired well: Adams 1-17 and 19-26 were catalogued by David Proskey, while Lyman Low catalogued Adams 28-41. These two men--among the finest American numismatists of their generation--elevate the Scott catalogues considerably. Several catalogues in the present offering have been extra-illustrated by an early American numismatist with interesting and unusual pasted-in cuttings of coins, medals and other numismatic items removed from various 19th-century general publications. The October 10, 1878 catalogue has been annotated in pencil by Bob Vail with buyers and prices for the large cent lots. Ex Melvin and George Fuld Library (Katen Sale 37, lot 1411); ex Harry W. Bass, Jr. Library (Kolbe Sale 77, lot 515); ex Bob Vail Library, who reordered and rebound the set, removing most duplicates (Kolbe Sale 86, lot 530); ex Cardinal Collection Library.
