Jon Hanson's Write-Up of the Showers Collection
[Showers, Philip M.]. JON HANSON'S INVENTORY AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PHILIP M. SHOWERS COLLECTION OF UNITED STATES HALF CENTS. April 1976. Photocopy. 34 legal-size pages, reproducing typewritten descriptions of 136 coins. Includes some notes on provenance and the condition census. Folded; fine. The importance of the Showers collection is summarized in the introductory text to the rare 1969 Stack's set of photographs illustrating it: "In the late 1930's, Mr. Philip M. Showers of New York found himself attracted by that charming and once familiar little work-a-day coin--the U.S. half cent... Now, more than three decades later, his collection of Half Cents can be considered the finest in existence... He did not want his collection to be broken up piecemeal... In accordance with his wish, it passed intact into the hands of the present owner." The new owner was Willis I. DuPont, who sold the set--again as a group--to Fred Werner, who sold it again in 1977 through Superior Stamp & Coin to Joe Flynn, Jr. In April 1976, the collection, still intact, was thoroughly catalogued by Jon Hanson, and it is his write-up that is present here. Hanson's descriptions are exceptionally thorough and include the weight of each piece and its value at the time. Most interesting. Ex Del Bland Library; ex Cardinal Collection Library.
