A.M. Smith's "Quarterly"
Smith, A.M. [publisher]. COIN COLLECTORS' OF THE UNITED STATES ILLUSTRATED GUIDE. Volume I, No. 4 and Volume II, Nos. 1-4, complete (Philadelphia, January 1881-April 1886). 8vo, original printed paper covers. (69)-92; 32; (2), 7, (23); (33)-43, (21); (65)-73, (23) pages; numerous text illustrations. First three numbers of second volume stapled at spine. One cover loose. Very good, generally. Bourne 1880-3. An interesting publication featuring articles on American coins, notes on various numismatic topics, auction sale reports, biographies of counterfeiters, lists of coins for sale, buying prices, etc. Issue No. 4 of the first volume features the second installment of a reprint of the revised 1870 edition of Edward Maris's Varieties of the Copper Issues of the United States Mint, in the Year 1794. In the October 1885 issue, issued over four years after the preceding issue (though still calling it a quarterly on the cover), Smith writes that "After some interval, the Coin Collectors' Guide once again calls in upon its many friends throughout this and other lands, assuring them this time, it 'has come to stay,' to make its regular trips with certainty.... The preparation of an elaborate encyclop¾dia of gold and silver coins of the world, required our entire attention; and having completed that heavy work satisfactorily, we start out once again with lighter and favorite craft, earnestly soliciting again the company of all our former fellow voyagers upon the sea of numismatics, and many new passengers also." True to his promise, the following two issues did come out on time though both are liberally padded with coin illustrations from the Encyclop¾dia. Ex M. Bourne Library.
