Steigerwalt's Confusing Initial Periodical
Steigerwalt, Chas. THE COIN JOURNAL. Volume I, No. 2 (Lancaster, 1878); Volume I, Nos. 1-6 (1879-1880), complete; Volume II, Nos. 1-4 (1880-1881), complete; and Volume III, Nos. 1-2 (1882), complete. Thirteen of the fourteen issues published. Varying self-covered formats, with the early issues being 21.5 by 15 cm and the later ones in a 29 by 21.5 tabloid format. Occasional line illustrations. The Volume II, No. 2 issue includes a two-page Supplement. Once folded, occasional dustiness and separation at folds but, considering their fragile nature, in above-average condition. Very rare. A nearly complete run of Steigerwalt's first periodical, lacking only the first issue. An interesting and informative publication. A Volume I, No. 1 and No. 2 were issued in 1878; the journal not taking off, he started it up again the next year and reverted back to Volume I, No. 1. Davis 1004. Champa was missing four issues; Bass had none. Ex John Eshbach Library (Kolbe & Fanning's 2013 New York Book Auction, lot 252) at $750 hammer; ex Cardinal Collection Library.
(Estimate: $500)
