Extremely Rare Plated Snow Catalogue
Strobridge, William H. CATALOGUE OF THE SNOW COLLECTION OF MODERN SILVER MEDALS AND COINS, WITH A COPIOUS APPENDIX. IN THE LATTER WILL BE FOUND AN INTERESTING VARIETY OF AMERICAN AND FOREIGN COPPER COINS AND MEDALS, CUT STONES, JEWELRY AND GEMS. New York, March 19-21, 1878. 8vo, later maroon cloth, gilt; original printed gray paper covers bound in. 60 pages; 1067 lots; errata slip tipped in; 2 fine photographic plates mounted on thick card stock and bound in on linen hinges. Neatly priced throughout in red ink. Fine. Adams 29, with plates. Rated B overall: "Fine European crowns. RR English, such as 1553 crown. Immunis Columbia Fine European medals. George II peace medal." One of the great rarities among 19th-century American auction sale catalogues issued with photographic illustrations. To the best of our knowledge, only three other examples with both plates have come to market in the modern era (including the copy bound with other catalogues in the Fuld set of Strobridge catalogues). This was Strobridge's final sale, catalogued in large part by his son. The conclusion of his introduction summarizes what must have been a bittersweet period in his life: "After a retirement of nearly two years, compelled by what at first threatened to be a total loss of sight, I esteem myself fortunate on my reappearance before my friends, in being able to make my dŽbut with this collection." Sadly, his recovery did not continue, and Strobridge lived out his life in blindness until he died--a little over twenty years following this sale. Davis 1032, recording no sales of this rare catalogue in the 1980-1991 period covered by his book. Ex Cardinal Collection Library.
