Woodward, W. Elliot. PRICED CATALOGUE OF SELECTED SPECIMENS OF COINS AND MEDALS, FROM THE AMERICAN PORTION OF THE COLLECTIONS OF HENRY M. BROOKS, ESQ., JEREMIAH COLBURN, ESQ., REV. J.M. FINOTTI, DR. EDWARD M. FIELD, AND DR. AUGUSTINE SHURTLEFF. New York: Bangs, April 28-May 1, 1863. 4to, removed from previous binding. 112 pages, interleaved; 2569 lots; price realized printed alongside each lot. Disbound, with the first and last leaves torn (including loss of three lots on final leaf); some tape repairs. Good. Adams 5, rated A overall. The Special Interleaved Large Paper Edition, issued after the sale with the price realized printed next to each lot. This important sale, Woodward's second semi-annual auction, features superb colonials, Washingtonia, large cents, store cards, etc. Indeed, the sale was entirely composed of American numismatic items, and it totaled $4,024.66, a new record. In his introductory comments, Woodward notes: "A few copies of this Catalogue, on large, extra fine and heavy paper, interleaved, can be furnished at $2.00 each..." The Civil War years were a heady time for coin collecting in the U.S., which Woodward alludes to in his introduction: "The proprietor is aware that he may labor under a disadvantage, in following so soon the sales of the splendid collections of Messrs. Haines, Smith, and Cogan; but hopes, on the contrary, that he may be benefited instead, by the impetus which has been given to collecting, by the sales referred to." Attinelli 29. Davis 1154. Ex Cardinal Collection Library.
