The Account Copy of Woodward's Ely Sale, with Three Photographic Plates
Woodward, W. Elliot. CATALOGUE OF HON. HEMAN ELY'S NUMISMATIC COLLECTION IN GOLD, SILVER, COPPER, &C. AMERICAN AND ENGLISH. New York, January 8-10, 1884. 8vo, later green cloth, gilt. iv, (3)-98 pages; 1872 lots; 3 fine heliotype plates of rare American coins and medals. Printed on thick paper. Hand-priced in pencil. Fine. Adams 62, the Account Sales Copy. Unique. In addition to the pencil prices realized, sub-totals are brought forward at the head and foot of every page. The first day of the sale totaled $1,983.62 (including a ".50 deduction on lot 159"); the second day realized $4,022.91; and the final day of the sale brought $1,349.60. Rated A+ overall by Adams: "Copper 1794 $1. Original 1827 25¢. Complete ?¢. Fantastic gold with complete proof sets. Revolutionary medals. MS Clinton 1¢." The first plate depicts rare American silver coins and early medals; plate two illustrates Massachusetts silver, early medals, American silver and gold, etc.; and the final plate depicts colonials, large cents and half cents, etc. This cataloguer had what I considered essentially to be a "buy bid" of $2500 when this copy was offered at the 2010 Stack Family Library sale (at the same estimate as here). After a ferocious bidding contest, it sold to the present consignor for an amazing $4250 hammer. Ex Stack Family Library (Kolbe Sale 111, lot 189); ex Cardinal Collection Library.
(Estimate: $750)
