Exceptionally Rare Woodward Catalogue
Woodward, W. Elliot. THE LITERATURE OF CRIME. CATALOGUE OF AN IMMENSE COLLECTION OF LEGAL TRIALS. New York: Bangs, April 29-30, 1885. 8vo, original printed paper covers. Title leaf; pages 31-105, (1); lots 629-1498. Complete as issued. Hand-priced in ink and printed on thick paper. Removed from previous binding. Trimmed, but not obtrusively so. Very good. Adams 74. Very rare: only the second solo copy we have ever handled. Non-numismatic, but a significant specialized collection nonetheless. Charles Davis recorded no copies as offered publicly between 1980 and 1991. The 2005 Moulton census included two copies. The pagination and lot numbering suggests that it was the continuation of another sale, but no Woodward sale leads up to it (in the sense of having 628 lots, for instance). This is the complete sale and collates correctly with the copy in the ANS Library. Ex Charles Davis auction of November 16, 2013, lot 583; ex Charles Davis auction of February 18, 2017, lot 530; ex Cardinal Collection Library.
(Estimate: $150)
