First Edition, Second Printing, Red Book & Blue Book
Yeoman, R.S. A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS. First (1947) edition, second printing. Racine: Whitman, 1946. 12mo, original red cloth, gilt. 254, (2) pages; text illustrations. Gilt fairly strong on both front cover and spine. A little shaken; dealer stamp to rear pastedown. Very good or better. [with] Yeoman, R.S., et al. HANDBOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS. First (1942) edition, second printing. Racine: Whitman, 1942. 12mo, original blue cloth, gilt. 126, (2) pages; text illustrations. A bit cocked; near fine. The second printing of the first edition of the Red Book. Eighteen thousand copies of the first edition were issued, divided equally between the first and second printing. In the first printing, the paragraph near the bottom of page 135 concludes with: "...the scarcity of this date." The second printing as here, concludes with: "...the scarcity of 1903 O." The fact that there are two printings of the first edition of the Blue Book was only identified recently. The differences are most apparent on page 70: while the first edition consists entirely of a typical list of dates and prices, page 70 of the second printing ends with a discursive note about condition and mint marks.
