KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 16.77 g, 12 h), Kaunos, circa 250. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPO Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right. R. Ashton: Kaunos, not Miletos or Mylasa, in: NC 2004, p. 42, 32. Price 2074 (Miletos). An attractive and well centered example. Flan crack and small scratch on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

Ashton notes that five specimens of this issue, in fresh condition, were present in the Meydancikkale hoard buried circa 240-235, and he therefore concludes that the issue is probably later than the chronology of circa 300-280 proposed by Price.
