Iraq 1931 (ND 1941) P-13 PMG Choice Very Fine 35 1/4 Dinar (India Print)

The nicest VF we have ever seen of this iconic issue. Entirely problem-free, with exceptional eye-appeal. A number of light folds are noted and are all that account for the grade; there are just a few too many for the note to be in an XF holder, but it certainly has the appearance of one. Collectors of Middle Eastern banknotes are certainly familiar with the story of these issues, which look like the types printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. for Iraq in the early 1940s, but it is worth repeating. During World War II, when supply routes were heavily impacted and unreliable the Iraqi government ordered a small number of low denomination notes from Nasik Security Printing Press in India, with the same basic design but a very distinctive look. Meant to make sure that there were enough notes in commerce at any given time, the notes circulated alongside the regular issue and the number produced was quite small.

Offered here is a fresh and original example of that iconic issue. Embossing of the serial numbers can clearly be seen, and the eye-appeal is exceptional. The colors are fresh and there are no signs of repairs, restorations or other enhancements to improve the appearance of this example. Some minor toning in the paper is all that prevents the "EPQ" designation, and while there are examples of this Pick number out there with a higher numerical grade, it would be difficult to improve upon the eye-appeal of the present offering. Worthy of a premium bid.
