Japan 1913 P-33b PMG About UNC 55 EPQ 100 Yen
An amazing rarity from Japan, issued at the turn of the century and redeemable in gold. A rarity even in circulated grades, this is an extremely difficult type to acquire in better grades, particularly in fully original condition. The example offered here is a banknote that gives the impression of an uncirculated example as the eye-appeal is exceptional and the originality can clearly be seen in the PMG holder. At the time of issue this represented a large sum of money in Japan, which explains why virtually no examples remain in higher grades. Variety with western block number. PMG has graded just 12 examples of this Pick number, with this example surpassed by just a single note (graded 63), making the example offered here the highest with EPQ status. The next finest in the PMG population report is a single PMG 35 EPQ (which was sold as part of the Dr. Norman Jacobs collection back in 2011), indicating the rarity of this note in better grades.
This type was first issued in December 1900 with Japanese block and serial numbers. As Japan started transitioning their banknotes to have western serial numbers the existing notes were slowly updated, which led to the release of this note in 1917. The notes with Western serial numbers are all dated Thaiso year 2 on the back at left (vertical, in red), translating to 1913. Amazing opportunity for the specialist and an offering we do not expect to repeat anytime soon.
