Triple Unite Charles I 1642 Oxford Mint, Tall narrow bust, Declaration on continuous scroll, plumes with bands on obverse only, S.2724, Brooker 834, North 2382, weight 27.01 grammes, pleasing GVF-EF, the obverse with excellent detail to the King's armour, the reverse which is sharp has the legend RELIG:PROT LEGI: ANG LIBER: PAR and the characteristic long die flaw, with INIMICI having double striking on MIC. Minted at the time of the English Civil War, the magnificent Triple Unite denomination was the flagship English coin of it's time. All examples are rare and desirable and would make a centrepiece to any hammered coin collection. Ex Sincona (offered then as NGC UNC details), Ex Patrick Finn Price List 12 1998, Ex Spink Numismatic Circular 1983 No 5575. Archival images of this coin, easy to find on-line, show an ugly scratched X beneath the date. No evidence of this is now apparent and the coin looks far superior without it, as would any fine item such as a new car or a piece of antique furniture that had had a scratch removed by a professional expert. The advent of US slabbing companies in recent years has introduced new descriptions such as "Altered Surfaces", "Unc details cleaned" and the traditional market is yet to settle around these new grading descriptions. This coin was not struck with an X scratched below the date so it has been restored or conserved, as the US graders would say, back to its original state, and we presume that anyone who wished to have the scratched X re-introduced could get an expert to do it.

Estimate: 47000-55000 GBP
