A note from BCD: A coin auction in the 1880's with two plates of photographically illustrated Byzantine coins is an oddity, to say the least. The only explanation is that the collector was able to persuade the auctioneer his coins were worth illustrating at any cost. On the other hand, Rohde's 742 duplicate antoniniani of Aurelianus and Severina did not deserve more than a cursory listing and failed to sell as a single lot according to the Prices Realized list.
