Anglo-Saxon England, Post-Crondall Types (c. 655-675), Pale Gold Shilling, 'Crispus' type, CBISPUS[ | D]OB CHES, helmeted, cuirassed and draped Romanised bust right, with elaborate hair, rev. +DELA[IONA] [in runic] | CESIAN + retrograde, annulet cross with cross pattée either side, in double beaded circle, 1.11g, 0° (cf. SCBI [Abramson] 69, 8; North 18; Spink 764), deliberately cut in antiquity resulting in approximate 15% loss in weight [1.10/1.30g], the surfaces creased and a small scuff behind head, otherwise of pale gold fabric, the struck details a really bold very fine, extremely rare, one of only ten recorded of this instantly recognisable and mysterious "Dark Age" coin type.
