Laudatory Medal Gifted by John E Gray to Thomas Davidson | John and Marie Emma Gray, Keeper of Zoology at the British Museum, 1863, AE Laudatory Medal, by G. G. Adams, I.E. AND M.E. GRAY., conjoined busts right, rev. within wreath, TRUST IN THE LORD AND DO GOOD, 58mm, 96.43g (BHM 2787), with an attractive lustre and lightly toned, as struck. In original case of issue and with hand written note in the hand of John Gray which reads, 'My dear Davidson I have great pleasure in sending you a medal in consideration of our old friendship, and of the high estimation I have of your labours in connection with the Brachiopoda yours ever, J E Gray, British Museum. 24th October 1872'.
John Edward Gray (1800-1875) was a notable zoologist and worked at the British Museum between 1824-1874. Later becoming keeper of the Zoological department in 1840. He was one of the most prolific taxonomists in the history of zoology, having described more than 300 species and subspecies of reptiles.

Maria Emma Gray (1787-1876), married John Gray in 1826. She is most notable for her work as a conchologist, algologist and scientific illustrator. She often collaborated with her husband, creating artworks of the species they studied.

Thomas Davidson (1817-1885), was a British palaeontologist, most notable for his study into the Brachiopoda fossil on which he published six volumes.
During his lifetime he was elected fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1852 and in 1857 to the Royal Society. Upon his death he bequeathed his extensive fossil collection to the British Museum.
