Department of Science and Art, Queen's National Medal, AE medal, 1864, awarded to Joseph Rollason, by W. Wyon, VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOOD QVEEN MDCCCLVI, crowned but left, rev. LOCAL PRIZE FOR SVCCESS IN ART AWARDED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART, within beaded and laurel border, JOSEPH ROLLASON. BIRMINGHAM. STAGE 18B. 1864 on edge, 56mm, 90.01g (Eimer 1511), with an attractive lustre and lightly toned, a pleasing extremely fine.
Proposed in 1852 by the Royal Commissioners of the Great Exhibition, a fixed sum was voted by Parliament in order to fund a self-supporting system of instruction. Medals were given at the public examinations in all three metals, for each of eight main groups of subjects. The medals were intended to encourage and stimulate talent at local schools throughout Britain amongst the industrial classes.
