Magas received the governorship of Kyrenaika from his stepfather, Ptolemy I, in circa 300 BC, when he was just twenty years old, as a reward for having assisted the reconquest of the region following a five-year revolt. Following Ptolemy's death in 283, however, Magas attempted to wrestle Kyrenaika from Ptolemaic control, eventually succeeding in 275 and declaring himself king.
