Islands off Sicily, Gaulos Æ 18mm. Roman rule, circa 250-200 BC. Bust of Astarte right, wearing stephane(?), within large crescent; V below chin / Warrior advancing right, brandishing shield and holding spear; ΓΑΥΛΙΤΩΝ to left, star to right. Calciati III, 1; SNG Copenhagen (Africa) 453; HGC 2, -. 4.58g, 18mm, 12h.

Near Very Fine. Very Rare.

From the Anders Collection, collector's tickets included.

Not differentiated in SNG Copenhagen though both are present in the collection (cf. 453 & 454), two obverse types are extant for this reverse from Gaulos: one such as the present piece with a head that appears unadorned or possibly wearing a diadem, said to be Astarte, and one helmeted, likely Athena or Roma.
