The nymph Io is depicted with a horn because she was transformed into a heifer by Zeus in an attempt to conceal her from Hera when she came to investigate his infidelity. The ruse failed and Hera decreed she was to be tied to a tree in the cult site Heraion and guarded by Argos Panoptes, to keep her and Zeus separated. Zeus ordered Hermes to kill Argos, after which Hera cursed Io to wander the land while tormented by a gadfly that constantly stung her. She eventually fled to Egypt where Zeus restored her.
