Besombes & Barrandon have broken down the western mints in Spain and Gaul and separated them from both the Rome mint and the numerous imitative issues by their distinctive styles, metal content, and pattern of hoard finds. These mints were put into operation to supply the western Roman Empire after the halt of provincial coinage and the closure of mint in Lugdunum in AD 41.
