The reverse legend, translating as "harmony of the armies," was an important theme of Nerva's brief reign. As an elderly politician with no connections to the military, he constantly was forced to make gestures indicating his support for his soldiers and generals. This need to appeal to the military led to perhaps Nerva's greatest achievement: adopting a popular general named Trajan as his son and successor. Nerva died shortly thereafter, and Trajan went on to be one of the greatest rulers in Rome's history.
