From the Historical Scholar Collection. Ex Alexandre de Barros Ship Collection (Classical Numismatic Group, Mail Bid Sale 73, 13 September 2006), lot 620; Stack's (8-10 June 1994), lot 2198

The Alexandre de Barros collection of ships on ancient coins was assembled with a view toward creating a broad overview of Greek and Roman ship types. This collection featured some of the earliest examples of ships known on coins.

The man on the far right with his hand in the air is the hortator, who was responsible for training the ship's crew and coordinating their rowing, as is he is doing here. The hortator's responsibilities also included keeping the crew in high spirits and maintaining good morale on voyages.
