The solidi of Theodosius I are the final series of coins that, in the opinion of the cataloger, boast a Classical Roman feel, being the final incarnation of the draped and cuirassed profile bust in a fine style. Though the coinage of the West retained the profile bust after his death, the quality of engraving gradually grew somewhat more primitive, mirroring the decreasing fortunes of the Western Roman Empire during the fifth century. The East adopted the three-quarter facing bust pioneered by Constantius II after Theodosius' death, and while the semissis and tremissis continued to be struck with a profile bust until the seventh century, the style was not of the caliber of Theodosius I's reign. Thus, the gold coinage of Theodosius I is an important chapter in Roman numismatics, and the solidi of his reign have a crisp, pleasing, and professional appearance that was difficult for later generations to replicate.
