Basil II Bulgaroctonos (AD 976-1025), and Constantine VIII. AV histamenon nomisma (22mm, 4.41 gm, 7h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 3/5. Constantinople, AD 977-989. Bust of Christ Pantocrator facing, wearing cruciform nimbus, pallium, and colobium, raising right hand in benediction, and holding book of Gospels cradled in left arm; two pellets in each cross limb / Crowned busts of Basil (on left), with slight beard, wearing loros of horizontal pattern, and Constantine, beardless, wearing plain chlamys pinned at right shoulder, each grasping long patriarchal staff held between them, ornamented with pellet on end of patriarchal cross. Sear 1795. Highly lustrous and boasting realistic portraits of Basil II as a hardened military man and Constantine VIII as a youthful prince.
