From the Historical Scholar Collection
The quality of detail of the full-length portrait of Constantine IX on the reverse provides an insight into Byzantine imperial and military dress at the time. He wears the typical garb of a senior Byzantine general, though his crown distinguishes him as emperor. As Byzantium was the successor state (technically the same state) to Rome, Byzantine generals dressed in a similar manner to their Roman counterparts. Byzantine officers retained the breastplate and tunic of earlier centuries, though certain styles and tastes evolved over time.
