Joseph Fry (1728-1787), founding-father of the Quaker Fry family in Bristol, type-founder and chocolate maker, bicentenary of his birth, a pair of silver medals, 1928, by Harold J. Youngman (1886-1968), struck (by the Royal Mint) for presentation to Company employees, bust of Fry l., wearing hat, rev. a cocoa tree atop a globe, 51mm., approx. 77.5gms. (BHM.4221; Eimer 2013), in black leather cases of issue; with a pair of copper medals, similar, un-cased, handsome 20th Century Royal Mint medals, mint state or virtually so (4)
The attribution "after E. Gill" and footnote in BHM is not exactly correct. Eric Gill had produced a very similar design for the obverse, carved in boxwood to the 2 inch specification size. The Royal Mint, foreseeing all manner of problems in converting model to die to medal, turned to the sculptor Harold Youngman.
(Estimate: 80-120 GBP)
