France / Siam, Louis XIV (1638-1643-1715), the Ambassadors of Siam present their credentials to the King, bronze medal, 1686, from the series of "Médailles de Louis le Grand", by J. Mauger, armoured bust right, rev. the three ambassadors bow to the King who is seated on raised steps, FAMA VIRTUTIS, and in ex. ORATORES REGIS SIAM, 72mm. (Divo 216; cf. Spink-Taisei 4, "Coins of Thailand", 11 February 1988 (lot 126), certified and graded by NGC as Mint State 63 Brown
The audience, held at Versailles on 1 September 1686, included an exchange of magnificent gifts. The ambassadors were to remain at Versailles for several weeks as the King's guests.
