Agriculture: Essex, Chelmsford, The Royal Agricultural Exhibition, 1856, silver medal, by Messrs. Pinches, profile of a massive bull to l., plough below exergue line, rev. façade of County Hall, Chelmsford, 51mm. (JT 56b; Grant ii, p. 57; Pinches - ), has been polished very fine, very rare; a Victorian brass trinket box, the lid inset with another, similar, Chelmsford medal, in copper, set into the lid, the base an Anerley Poultry Show copper medal, undated [1856], also by Pinches, showing a splendid cockerel, box 44mm. high x 52,5mm. diam., very fine; Worcestershire Agricultural Society, founded 1838, copper medal, by Ottley, farmyard with animals and steam traction engine, 63.5mm., extremely fine though surface dull ; Warwickshire Agricultural Society, founded 1838, Honorary Medal, pewter, farmyard animals, 53mm., fine, pierced; Toogood & Sons, copper medal, farmyard animals, 44.5mm., extremely fine (5)
The Royal Agricultural Exhibition was held in Chelmsford on 11 July 1856, after an invitation from a group of Essex farmers. The local people raised £3,000 to run it and it closed with a profit of £540. The second medal in the box relates to "a poultry show, upon a very extensive scale [which] was opened ... in the Anerley Gardens, near to the Anerley entrance to the Crystal Palace grounds". Taylor lists the Chelmsford medal from a white metal specimen in the British Museum.
