MARSDEN, FOR STONE BREAKER', standing figure of Ceres, rev. armorial shield within wheat wreath, engraved details around, 55.5mm., in virtually pristine maroon leather fitted case of issue, choice extremely fine
Henry Rowland Marsden (1823–1876), Mayor of Leeds (1873-75), philanthropist and inventive engineer. He had emigrated to America, to New York in 1848, moving to Connecticut in 1850, all the while building his wealth with a mass of patents. In 1855 he gained world-wide recognition and much further wealth with his Stone Crusher. In 1862 he returned to Leeds with his family and set up a factory making his patent stone-crushing machinery, 'H. R. Marsden Ltd, stone breaking machine makers'. It is recorded that he received 45 first class gold and silver medals and honours for his inventions. Alas, we can only offer this single medal.
(Estimate: 140-180 GBP)
