Education: Highgate School [Sir Roger Cholmeley's School at Highgate], a pair of Victorian prize medals, silver and copper, undated, arms and motto, ALTIORA IN VOTIS, 43.5mm., nicely mounted in circular [108mm] oak frames, seemingly mint state; Borough of East Ham, Education Committee, family medals for perfect attendance: set of 5 copper medals, 1903 (J. Ryan); 1903, 1904, 1905-6, 1906 (E. Ryan), first two with St. George design, others with shields, 39.5mm., in fitted case (by A. H. Darby, Medallist, Birmingham); others (3), all St. George, 1900, 1902 (D. Ryan), both cased (one case damaged); 1902 (J. Ryan), all with suspension rings; Scotland, Edinburgh, a pair of copper medals to John Linton Gray, Royal High School, Sir Walter Scott Club, Essay Competition, undated, 54mm.; University, prize for Statistics, 1924, 51.5mm., both cased, extremely fine (10)
Highgate School was founded in 1565; amongst its old boys are Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889) and Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984), who was taught there by T S. Eliot. John Linton Gray was the author of The Nation's Intelligence, published in 1936.
