H.M.S. Calliope was present in the harbour at Apia in Samoa, attempting to moderate in a colonial stand-off between ships of the United States and Imperial German navies. One of eleven ships present when the typhoon struck, she was the only one to survive, thanks to the superb seamanship of Captain Henry Coey Kane (1843-1917).
