A Great War Canadian Field Artillery Officers Military Cross, Mentioned in Despatches group of 3 awarded to Captain George Aloysius Downey 1st Howitzer Brigade and 35th Battery, 10th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery who was Gassed at Vimy on the 19th of May 1917 comprising, Military Cross, GVR, (engraved to reverse but not seen), 1914‑1920 British War and Victory Medal with MiD emblem, (Capt. G.A. Downey), mounted in a large, glazed frame, toned very fine (3).

Awarded the Military Cross for Conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer was in charge of a howitzer section supporting an infantry advance. Although he lost a gun team and had three drivers wounded, he extricated his section with no delay, keeping in close touch with the infantry and engaging targets which were delaying the advance. He showed courage and endurance of the highest order.

George Aloysius Downey was born on the 29th of August 1894 in Guelph, Ontario he was educated at the University of Toronto gaining a BSc. he was a member of the Canadian Officer's Training Corps and is shown on the Militia lists as Lieutenant 1st (Howitzer) Brigade 11th (Howitzer) Battey Guelph, Ontario.
He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Ontario on the 1st of February 1916 a Civil Engineer by
profession.


He served in France with the 11th Howitzer Brigade Canadian Field Artillery from July 1916 to March 1917 and with the 35th Battery 10th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery from March 1917 to November 1918, participating in the actions at the Ypres‑Kemmel sector, Somme, Vimy, Hill 70, Passchendaele, Lens‑Vimy sector, Neuville‑Vitasse, Amiens, Arras, Cambrai and Mons.


He was demobilised as an Acting Captain in 1919.
Sold in a large, glazed, frame with a Canadian Artillery Cap Badge three shoulder titles and a Canadian Artillery collar badge, Sold with 60 pages of copied service papers.
