Herbert William Ralph Chandler, 3rd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, late 5th Battalion Gloucester Regiment (T.F.), Commanding Officer Gold Coast Regiment (Supplementary Reserve) comprising, Military Cross, GVR, unnamed as issued, 1914‑15 Star, (1643 Sgt. H.W.R. Chandler. Glouc. R.), 1914‑1920 British War and Victory Medals, (Lieut. H.W.R. Chandler.), Jubilee Medal 1935, unnamed as issued, Coronation Medal 1937, unnamed as issued, Efficiency Decoration, GRI. Gold Coast top suspender unnamed as issued, contemporarily mounted for wear by Spink, toned fine (7).

For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led a bombing attack with great courage and determination. By his fine example the attack was successfully carried out.



Sergeant Herbert William Ralph Chandler landed in France on the 14th of August 1915 with the 5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, he applied for the Territorial Force War Medal, but this was denied. Promoted from Sergeant 5th Glosters to be Temporary 2nd Lieutenant 15th of August 1915, York & Lancaster Regiment to be Temporary Lieutenant 24th of November 1915, Acting Captain 12th of January 1917. He relinquished the rank of Adjutant and Acting Captain 3rd Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment on the 14th of November 1919. The London Gazette of the 18th of October 1921 he retained the rank of Lieutenant, but this was altered in the Gazette of the 23rd of January 1922 stating granted the rank of Captain, Substituted for Gazette notification 18 Oct. 1921. Captain Chandler M.C., having exceeded the age limit of liability to recall, relinquishes his Commission 9th of April 1947, retaining the rank of Captain. Was also the Commanding Officer as Colonel of the Gold Coast Regiment (Supplementary Reserve), until his death at the European Hospital, Accra, The Gold Coast on the 30th of March 1947, he was Colonial Customs Service, Comptroller for Customs, Gold Coast.
