A Great War, Battle of the Somme, Military Medal awarded to Private Samuel Hayes, 11th Battalion
Royal Warwickshire Regiment, (9201 Pte S. Hayes. 11/R. War. R.), very fine (1).


Military Medal The London Gazette of the 20th of October 1916.


Private Hayes's Battalion was heavily engaged in the battle of the Somme, firing smoke bombs during the 46th Division attack at Gommecourt on the 1st of July 1916. The 11th Battalion attacked Pozieres on the 15th of July, advanced to Contalmaison Wood casualties 275 all ranks, held positions Bazentin‑le‑Petit Wood and Mametz Wood Attacked German Intermediate line 12th August 1916 ‑ 150 casualties ‑withdrew from the German Line after hand‑to‑hand fighting.


Total casualties for the Somme operations for the 11th Battalion from 1st July to 16th November 1916 758 all ranks.


The Great War Medal Collectors Companion, Volume 1, by Howard Williamson, states that this Military


Medal Gazette was for awards for the 1st of July 1916 and for the month of July and August 1916.
