A Battle of the Somme, 1916, Grenadier Guards, Military Medal awarded to Private Martin Lynch, 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards in the attack at Ginchy the Regimental History states "over 150 Germans killed with the bayonet before rushing to clear first objective" comprising Military Medal, GVR, (23109 Pte. M. Lynch. 4/G~: Gds:), edge knock to rank, otherwise toned very fine (1).

The following are the correct descriptions of the undermentioned Warrant Officers, Non‑Commissioned Officers and Men whose names have recently appeared in the London Gazette for the award of the Military Medal and Meritorious Service Medal: ‑.


Military Medal


London Gazette dated 21st of December 1916 23109 Pte. M. Lynch, 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards.


The Great War Medal Collectors Companion, Volume 1, by Howard Williamson, states that this Military Medal Gazette was for awards for operations on the Somme in September and October 1916 including the capture of Thiepval, Regina Trench, Bayonet Trench and Delville Wood, amongst others, Dates noted from 1st of September to 21st of October 1916.


4th Battalion Grenadier Guards


Arrived Halloy 30th of July 1916. Later to camps at Arqueves, Mailly‑Maillet before taking over line Beaumont Hamel sector. To Vauchelles‑les‑Authie 20th of August, Gezaincourt 22nd of August, Vignacourt 24th of August. Entrained Mericourt 25th of August and from there to Ville‑sous‑Corbie. To Carnoy 8th September. Worked on road running from the village to Wedge Wood. Later to huts near Talus Boise. To Line between Guillemont and Leuze Wood midnight 9th of September. In support failed attack on the Quadrilateral 12th of September. Relieve Happy Valley. To Carnoy 14th of September. And from there to the eastern side of Trones Wood. Attack towards Lesboeufs 15th of September – from reserve advanced on right passing over first objective. Regimental history notes heaps of dead Germans as evidence of recent fighting. Dug in 500 yards north of Ginchy and consolidated gains. In support of attack 20th of September – dug communication and assembly trenches for the forthcoming attack. Relieved and to Bernafay Wood 22nd of September. Moved forward 24th of September. Attacked 12.35pm 25th of September – Regimental History notes over 150 Germans killed with the bayonet before rushing to clear first objective. Second objective taken. Relieved 10pm 26th of September and to Carnoy. Casualties since 18th of September – 458. To Sandpit Camp 30th of September, Morlancourt 1st of October. From their via Amiens to Epaumesnil. To Sandpit camp 10th of November, Carnoy 12th November, trenches in front of Lesboeufs and Guedecourt 13th of November, Carnoy the 17th of November 1916.


Martin Lynch attested for the Army on a Short Service (Duration of the War) Engagement on the 24th of February 1915. He stated he was a 30‑year‑old Miner from Wakefield who had been born in Wigan, Lancashire. His papers state he had bad teeth! He served with the 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards until he was demobilised on the 1st Of February 1919. He is also entitled to the British War and Victory Medals.
